Bogota is the capital of Colombia, country located in the continent of South America. Its population is approximately 6.7 million, and it's surrounded by the eastern Andes Mountains, with a nestled high of 2620 meters above sea level. Santa Fe de Bogota was founded in 1538 and after its independence from Spain in 1824 its name was shortened to Bogota.
Bogota is divided into zones according to their own characteristics: North, The most modern upscale zone where the highest income people lives, shopping centers and Zona Rosa. South, Industrial zone and the barrios are located here. Centro, where the most important governmental and financial offices operate join them the cultural sites. East, Industrial areas, parks and the International airport by the name of "El Dorado" The city is expanding by the northwest. Bogota is a city of contrasts between colonial churches and modern universities with futuristic architecture. It is the largest economic center in Colombia where most companies in the country have their headquarters. The emerald trade is a huge business and moves millions of dollars domestically. The colonial center "La Candelaria" where houses with balcones or porches and narrow brick streets give a sense of historical times. Looking north from "La Candelaria" we see "Monserrate" a mountain at 3030 meters above sea level, that at the top has a church which residents of Bogota, 'bogotanos' visited frequently for "El Señor Caido" Fallen Christ who they believed performed miracles, and it is accessible by "teleferico” aerial tramway.Bogota is famous for many different festivals like the Ibero American Theater Festival that last for seventeen days with the participation of over 200 theatrical groups from around the world. Also counts with a diversity of Museums like "The Gold Museum" that focus on the pre-hispanic societies and golden artifacts. The National Museum exhibits from pre-hispanic societies to the modern era of the Colombian History. The Botero Museum, Named after Fernando Botero , whose portraits of obese people and animals make him a best kwon artist in his own style. In the year 2000 Botero donated hundreds of his paintings and sculptures to his people in Colombia, and this is the collection that exhibits the museum. The weather in Bogota, Colombia is 50 to 80 F year around, very comfortable, which in a way make people more outgoing, cheerful and happy.
